Terms
The deal, in plain words.
PetitMotif is an iPhone app that turns a word into a small cross-stitch pattern. It's made and sold by Luis Guzman Lorenzo ("we"). By using the app you agree to what's on this page. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
These terms are between you and us. Apple isn't a party to them, but Apple can enforce them against you, and Apple isn't responsible for the app or for anything you make with it.
The short version
- You're responsible for the words you type and for how you use what comes out.
- Don't use PetitMotif to copy someone else's characters, logos or art.
- We don't claim your patterns. Stitch them, give them away, sell your finished work.
- Credits are a licence to make patterns, not property. Apple handles refunds.
- Patterns start with AI. They won't always be good. We can't promise otherwise.
Using the app
There are no accounts. Your patterns and your credit balance live on your phone, and exports go to your Photos. The word you type does go to our server, which is where the picture is drawn; the privacy page says exactly what we keep and for how long.
You need to be at least 13 to use PetitMotif. If you're under 18, use it with a parent or guardian's permission, and let them approve any purchases. The App Store rates PetitMotif 4+, which is about what the app contains, not about who can buy things in it.
PetitMotif is in English only for now.
What you type, and what you make with it
This is the part that matters most, so it's first among the rules.
You're responsible for the words you submit. Don't ask PetitMotif for anything you don't have the right to make. In particular, don't use it to create material that copies or imitates:
- characters, mascots or figures someone else owns;
- brand names, logos, wordmarks or product designs;
- a specific artwork, album cover, poster or illustration;
- the distinctive style of a named living artist or designer.
Don't use the app to make anything unlawful, hateful, sexual, or aimed at harassing someone. Don't try to break the app, get around the credit system, or call our server from anything other than the app.
If a pattern you make infringes someone's rights, that's on you, not on us — including any claim brought against us because of it.
What the app refuses
The app keeps a list of well-known character and brand names and refuses them before anything is sent off. It's a short list and a blunt one: it matches names, so it won't catch a description that gets to the same place by another route, and it doesn't recognise artist styles at all. Separately, the image service sometimes returns nothing usable — its own safety filters, or an idea too busy for a tiny grid — and the app tells you it couldn't stitch that one. We can't always tell those two apart.
Please read the list as what it is — a courtesy, not a clearance. A word getting through isn't us saying it's fine to make, and none of the rules in the section above stop applying because the app didn't stop you. The judgment is yours.
Who owns the patterns
We don't claim ownership of the patterns you make. Whatever rights can be held in them, we treat as yours, and we assign to you anything we might otherwise hold.
So you can:
- stitch them, frame them, give them away;
- sell the finished stitched pieces;
- sell or share the pattern chart itself;
- post them anywhere you like.
Images you export carry a small "Made with PetitMotif.app" line at the bottom. We'd love you to leave it on, but it's your picture — crop it off if you'd rather.
Two honest caveats. First, the picture behind your pattern is made by AI from your word, and in many countries work generated that way may not be protected by copyright at all — which means you may not be able to stop someone else from using the same pattern. We can't tell you how that falls where you live. Second, our rights are the only ones we can give you: if your word pointed at something someone else owns, nothing here makes that output yours to use.
Two people typing the same word may get similar patterns. Nothing you make is exclusive to you.
The app itself — its name, design, code and the ready-made patterns we ship with it — stays ours. Those are for your own stitching, not for reselling as a pattern pack.
Credits and purchases
- Generating a pattern costs one credit. You get a couple free to start with, plus the ready-made patterns, which cost nothing to stitch. The app shows what you have left.
- Extra credits come in packs bought through the App Store. Current prices are on the home page and in the app.
- A credit is a limited licence to generate one pattern, not property and not currency. It has no cash value, can't be exchanged for money, and can't be transferred or sold.
- Credits are kept on your device, not in an account, so we can't look your balance up. They usually survive deleting and reinstalling the app, and they may come across when you set up a new phone from a backup — but that's iOS's doing, not ours, and we can't promise it.
- A credit is only spent when a pattern actually arrives, so a refused word or a failed attempt doesn't cost you one. Editing a pattern, re-colouring it and stitching along are free. If something goes wrong, write to us and we'll sort it out where we reasonably can.
- Purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. They're one-time purchases, not a subscription. Refunds go through Apple, under Apple's policies. We can't issue one.
- Credits are otherwise non-refundable, including unused ones, and they don't expire — but if we stop running PetitMotif, unused credits stop working with it. See "If the app stops" below.
- You keep what you've already made. Exported patterns are in your Photos and stay there whatever happens to your balance.
AI, and what we can't promise
Patterns are drawn by Google's Gemini image model from the word you type, then turned into a small stitch grid — usually 24×24 — and matched to DMC thread colours by the app. We say this plainly because you should know what you're getting.
AI output is unpredictable. A pattern may be ugly, wrong, nothing like what you pictured, or hard to stitch. That's what the editor is for, and it still won't save every one. Thread colours are our best match, and screens show colour differently from thread. We don't promise the app will be available, fast, or error-free, and we don't promise any particular pattern will be worth stitching. The app is provided as it is, without warranties beyond those your local law gives you and we can't exclude.
Limits on what we owe you
PetitMotif is a small app made by one person. If something goes wrong, what we owe you is limited to what you paid us for credits in the twelve months before it happened — and we aren't liable for indirect losses, lost profits, lost time, wasted thread or lost patterns.
Some places don't allow limits like these. Where that's true, this section applies as far as the law lets it and no further, and your statutory rights as a consumer are untouched.
If we need to stop serving you
We can refuse a request, block a word, or stop serving an install that's abusing the app — automating it, trying to break it, or using it against the rules above. If that happens and you have paid credits left, write to us; we'll do what's fair.
You can stop any time by deleting the app.
If the app stops
We hope not to, but a one-person app can end. If we shut PetitMotif down we'll say so on this site and in the App Store listing first, with as much notice as we reasonably can. Patterns already saved to your Photos are yours and unaffected.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change we'll update this page and the date below. For anything significant we'll note it in the app too. Carrying on using PetitMotif after a change means you accept the new version.
Privacy
What the app collects and why is on the privacy page. It's part of this agreement.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of [GOVERNING LAW — JURISDICTION TO BE FILLED IN], and disputes go to the courts of [COURTS — JURISDICTION TO BE FILLED IN]. If you're a consumer, this doesn't take away the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in, or your right to bring a claim there.
Odds and ends
If a part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing something once doesn't mean we've given it up. These terms, plus the privacy page, are the whole agreement between us about PetitMotif. We may transfer them to a company we set up to run PetitMotif; your rights don't change if we do.
